Trouble – Wireless at the Pub
Just had an interesting learning experience. So my favorite pub for a long time, even going back to when I was living in Lexington in the 90′s is called McCarthy’s. A bit of background: It is a true Irish pub owned by a Irish horseman by the name of Roddy. I am not sure of the exact relationship, but I know he had something to do with a Kentucky Derby winner back in the 90′s and hence the ownership of this pub now. It is decorated in mostly pictures and memorable of fine racing horses, as is probably not surprising. One of the nicest touches I think is the brass tags that one would usually find on a thoroughbred’s halter and tacked along the front edge of the bar naming both famous horses and famous horse farms, some local some not so much. Anyway, the pub is a true bar. Basically any drink you want, including of course draft beer, especially good dark draft beer, cider on tap, lots of Irish and Scottish whiskeys, and about any other drink you want. However, if you want more than potato chips plain or in salt and vinegar, since the establishment across the street has moved, you better eat before you come. It is a nice crowd here usually up until about 10:30 or 11:00 pm. Mostly being a few older folks having a drink, some good conversation, and catching the latest news and horse races both on this side and the other side of the Atlantic. It does however, pick up in a major way when classes are in session, especially starting around 10:30-11:00 pm on a Thursday, Friday and Saturday night.
All of that is background information for my discovery. I have never gotten out the computer while here at the bar, instead usually leaving it in the car. However Jessie, one of the bar tenders, has been promised a look at pictures of jousting. So I thought I would bring it in with me today. I figured I would have to bring up my cellular based connection device. Prior to do that though, I searched quickly for wireless access through the built-in standard wireless connection (301G). Imagine my sheer surprise to see McCarthy’s, encryption disabled, 100% signal strength. So, I am sitting here writing this zipping at a nice bourbon and diet, which will get stronger on the second one. My trouble – well now I can post to my blog, as well as Facebook and MySpace while sitting here getting a good feeling. And what happens if it is one of those rare evenings when I decide to really get crazy, not that those occur on a regular basis, but it does happen on rare occasion. Well the good news, a quick look and I see now outlets and my battery typically runs about two hours or so if I am only doing internet. It usually takes me about three hours to get a really good evening going in that sense. While I am sure I could get someone to plug me in behind the bar, I think I am probably pretty save.
An aside thought here. I have tried on a few occasions when I have stuff to do from remote to work on occasion from one of the two or three coffee shops that I frequent. However, that has failed usually. Most everyone knows the ones I like and I have literally been found in those to do something in particular for someone. Heck, at one the other day I actually had two people from newspapers that I do the information technology stuff come in while I was there. Granted, they were there trying to sell some special advertising, but do you think when they saw me they did not mention about seven things each that they needed to have done by the electronic services department? So, a new plan I am thinking of is sleep in, keep later hours, and come to the pub to do my work. That will after all make much more like how I learned all this technology… …comes back from the memory of the programming at 1:00am in the computer lab in the basement of the girls dormitory at Transylvania, munching pizza and sipping Beam and Jolt cola (the original energy drink) or something of such a nature.
Anyway, a few quick notes. I started earlier last week with an attempt at trying to post two times a day. However, I have obviously sucked since I posted that along with two others in a three-hour period. I believe there has actually been an average of about one half post on a daily basis since then. Anyway, aside from the fact that it means that I suck once again, recall that it was not a promise, but just an attempt. And hey, now that I know I can come down here to McCarthy’s all afternoon who knows how many posts will occur the next Saturday that I am in town (likely two weeks from now, as I know I am out-of-town next weekend). This past week with work was just to busy with all the stuff I had to do and I did not manage to work in the time to post as much as I had desired.
I do have the advertising stuff to work on as well. However that was to be this weekend. I ended up hanging with friends last night in first Danville and later in Lexington. It was fun. Oh, and sometime here in the next few days I will have to point folks to the pictures of myself and Anne on Facebook – it is interesting picture that involves her, myself and a big sparkling ring. I will leave everyone to wondering for a few days. Oh, back to what I was saying. So I moved a load of stuff last night and this morning, and then today I have been mostly picking up a few odds and ends here and there that I need a the new place in addition to doing few things at the new place. Slowly starting to get settled in there.
I did manage to get my almost free trial membership at Lexington Athletic Club activated this afternoon too, which is a good thing. I have continued with my walks just about everyday. And now it is usually myself and the new roommate so even more motivation and someone to keep score on how often it occurs. I did however, eat a LOT of crap yesterday. Do not even want to see the scale today. LAC however is going to help that process a lot I think.
Tomorrow is not looking good for much to be accomplished with posts or ad campaign either. I have more stuff to move, want to get some time in with the horses, need to rebuild a computer some one, need to make a piece of armour for ground fighting, and need to go to a fight practice. Obviously not even all those things are going to occur give the constraints of time.
It is obvious to me I am going to be waking up on Monday, heading back into work, I am going to be saying to myself what happened to the weekend? Is it over already? it was way to short, must have only been one day instead of two.
