Windstream – Thumbs Down

WindstreamOn occasion I just have to vent to the blog about something that is bugging me. Tonight Windstream has just crossed my threshold of tolerance. I went with them at the new house largely because they offer a slightly higher speed to the house through the DSL options they have available then what can be gotten through an equivalent cable type of connection. And I have to admit that the thought of higher speed and even slightly lower prices had a lot of appeal to me.

However, I have now had the Windstream DSL connection for just over two weeks, maybe it is getting closer to three. I had not noticed so much the first week or two that I had it, largely because I was out and about and using mostly wireless connections where ever I was at for the tie being. I further did not notice so much as I largely use the laptop when I am at home sitting on couch. I had not located the wireless router until last weeks so I had continued to use the AT&T cellular card to connect. I did find the wireless router and set it up this past week.

However, now that I have that I have realized that about the maximum uptime on the connection is on average twenty-five minutes. It typically comes up when I log on and check something, which would explain why I had not run into on the desktop, as I rarely stay online there for more than thirty minutes at that computer. The laptop however, is a whole different story. If the connection just blinked and came back up that would be bad enough. Obviously doing anything like that VPN type connections or if I was interested real-time games, that would be unacceptable in itself. However, the connection usually blinks out and takes somewhere in the neighborhood of five to ten minutes to reset. Worse than that, on at least one or two occasions per night I have had to physically reset the Windstream DSL modem. I find any amount of downtime and especially doing a reset unacceptable.

It is worse though, given the short duration of these I have only called Windstream a couple of times in regards to the matter. The rest of the time, I have not called as it has come back on longer then the hold time I would encounter while trying to get them to reset it. The times I have called, a quick reset has of course straightened out the problem. It is still unacceptable though.

Anyway, the whole process has thoroughly put me out. I am going to give them a call on the morrow during regular business office and point out to them the problem. That it is really necessary for me to have a continuous and stable connection to satisfy my need for the high-speed connection. Fundamentally, if they can not resolve the problem by the end of the week I am going to be forced to cancel the account, ask for a refund, and move to cable connection. I am just curious if anyone else has had such problems with Windstream? DSL? Much worse than any kind of problem I have had with cable service in the past.
