Pub, Bar, Club
Something that I have thought about a little bit now and then is the idea of opening my own pub. I am not sure if it would be a pub, a bar, a club, or even a restaurant of some sort. It is something that has kind of a joke around with different friends for a number of years. It usually comes up in a circle of friends after I have cooked a big meal for some group that is over. Sometime or another there is discussion of having a maybe a pub that serves just a few regular items, has a daily special or something, and of course serve drinks and such.

The basic explanation is that you should really do something that you know well and that you love. Okay, I admit that I know computers and information technology about as well as anyone, at least when I fully apply myself that is the case. However, I do not love it, at least not like I did 20 years ago. As far as knowing, well I certainly have spent enough time in such places in the past to really know the ins and outs of them very well.
I was ready at one point to mention the idea to someone who I was with as an idea of what we coud do in the future. I think it would have been a good idea and had really given it some thought. I was not completely sure how things would have gone with it and I do not even know what she would have thought of the idea as things ended before between us before I mentioned it to her.
Lately I have been letting my thoughts return to this idea a bit. I especially was thinking about it this evening as I visiting a night club in St. Louis. It really put the idea in my mind again in a major way, hence the reason I guess that I am writing about this at 5:30 AM in the morning. Of course the night club idea just complicates the whole idea somewhat. That largely being the question of what kind establishment it would actually be? After all the vision of it has to be what I would want, but I have at least four different ways I see it.
- It could be just a pub. A tavern in the simplest and most traditional sense. In this I admit I think of the McCarthy’s. A place with a few beers on tap, a cider as well, a fully stocked bar with plenty of bourbons and such as well. It would still have to be a high-class kind of place though. A place were folks would come after work and maybe the college crowd in later hours. Perhaps with this option a stage for a live band on occasion and of course regular course of music otherwise. It would also maybe have a pool table or two and dart boards.
- Maybe a step up from just drinking kind of place. Same general idea though it would have a few items on the menu as a regular basis. Maybe food would be served at lunch and again for a few hours around dinner time. And of course, just because I like to be creative, it there is going to be food I would have to have the opportunity to have a special on occasion or of the day. The kind of thing would be served until it is gone kind of deal. Maybe during the day it could more of a coffee shop with sandwiches or something like that. A kind of lunch place that is a good pub later in the eve.
- Maybe more of a regular restaurant. Okay, really, this one does have its appeal. But then again as I think on the idea of a full service restaurant is just not the idea I have in mind. Besides, I think this would be just too much work for what I would want and not really give me exactly what I would want out of it all anyway. Still there is that one little part of the idea of having all sorts of different things on the menu and a bunch of special to choose from that is just so interesting.
- More of a nightclub. You know the place – somewhere downtown with blackened out windows and when you go in the ceilings and all are black. But the music is blasting like crazy and it is the place to be when hour is right. Plenty of excitement and a massive appeal of the young college crowd.
- And I suppose there is the option to try to be everything to everyone and have three or four different sections where various parts of the above are all rolled into it. Though I don’t think you can put the nightclub and restaurant idea together to be honest.
Of those options I think I find the first or second one most appealing. However it is all really just an exercise in thinking outside of the box, as I am not likely to go running out and trying to get it organized or setup in order to do these kinds of things anytime soon. This is what happens when you sleep a bit in the afternoon and end up being awake all night.
