Beer Cheaper than Water

BeerSomething that I realized today while having lunch. It used to be that if you were dining out you could have a coffee or fountain beverage for a good deal cheape?r than you could have a beer to accompany that meal. These days however, that is starting to go the other direction. Much to my dismay it is not because beer is getting cheaper, but that beverages are just going through the roof from a pricing perspective. Anyway – some hero’s – anyone involved in keeping beer prices less than even water, much less soda-pops.

Kind of odd thing to realize I know, but during lunch today I opted for water. I do that fairly regularly anyway. I happened to notice that when I did that if I had went for the Coke-Cola it would have set me back another $1.89. The coffee, which is the other real option I was considering would have been $1.69. I have recently been to a few establishments that are now hitting in the $2 and change range for a soft drink beverage.

This really had extra emphasis put on it last week, when the ice storm caused loss of power at the water treatment plant, which resulted in boil water advisories for a week and one chain that I ate charged me the same $1.89 for bottled water. Bottled water which was clearly labeled by Kroger and was purchased just up the shopping center for probably $4.99 a case or so.

Now consider that where I had lunch had draft beers for $1.50, regular price and even bottled domestics – which now includes Amberbach – which is not a bad beer were only a $1.75. The same establishment mentioned above has a happy hour with drafts for $1.25 on almost every evening. Basically, almost any establishment with a bar built-in offers at least a happy hour price of draft beer in the under $2.00 range and most offer beer in that price range on domestic drafts under that mark even as a regular price.

I am just waiting for the unlimited refills to kick in on the beer and then the world will truly be a happy place!

** – Editors note – I swear that at one time I knew the difference between then and then, but apparently somewhere along the way I killed that set of brain cells accidentally thinking they were not required. My apologies for that error, that I know I make often. To me these days it seems there is only then and I guess I just need to pay more attention and think a bit more before hitting publish.
