Circular Reference

Circular ReferenceRecently noticed something when I was doing a little bit of work trying to do a little promotion to drum up a few more readers to the blog here at Mephistos. Thing that really stands out is a lot places that are promotional tools for people with blogs tend to attract only other bloggers as even somewhat regular visitors. This leads to a lot of promotion to the people who probably are already reading and has even more issues.

I am not going to say that everyone that is going to those various promotion sites are readers to be sure, but to be certain a lot of the promotional sites have some pretty good visitor numbers. Unfortunately most of the visitor traffic is not from folks interested in what you have to say so much as there to promote their only little piece of the internet pie to potential readers.

I admit, if a site is getting a good review on some of those sites and it has a topic that overlaps with something that I am really interested in I will give them a view on occasion. Sometimes, I have even used it as a tool to find things to do links over to the site if it really relates to the topics of one of my own blogs.

That in itself leads to my next thought though. A lot of what I see is a huge great big listing of blogs posting wanting link exchange deals and of course that is a bit a promotion in itself. But if two blogs that have little to no traffic link to one another the net gain is one more user for each, assuming the respective authors actually take time to read one another’s material. And lets face it, if you are the blog with thousands of regular visitors daily, how likely are you to be playing the link exchange game with other bloggers?

There are a few sites that tend to come with minor audience, such as NetworkedlBlogs. But even that site fails and has the same kinds of issues. I regular see the circular link thing going on there with sometimes hundreds of people in a big link message. One step beyond there though is the that the number of followers advances your prestige and listing and makes things automatically show up. I see follower exchange lists starting to show up these days. And clearly we know this is going on with twitter and such ilk already. My question is, if a so-called follower is not really reading and hence following, is there really any value there?

Certainly getting a few links out there in front of people is a good thing and can help a long way, but sometimes a bit of a thought should be given to where you are searching for things and how to accomplish what you are really wanting, which is more actual eyes to lay eyes on your site.

Yet, it'd be hard to promote a blog to people who don't read blogs. You might be the one to turn them on to it, but probably not. .-= Ronnica´s last blog ..Tidbits =-.
