Observing Again

WaylonSo a regular feature going on its third attempt. Lets see how it works this time. First, my sincere apologies for not posting so much this week, especially in comparison to the previous month. Hopefully I will get that going a bit better this week coming up, but I am not making any promises. Pretty much every week between now and the end of the year is going to be kind of crazy with things going on both at work and otherwise. Additionally, I have done something to my back, maybe Friday or Thursday. I can not pinpoint the action or even if there was one, but my mid-back left side especially is a bit painful and slowing me down on all these things too. Well, enough of all that stuff, let’s get to some observations.

  • Anyone know why Christmas is observed on the 25th of December? Of course those less well read will say Jesus was born on that day, those a bit more read will suggest it was adopted by the early church to coincide with pagan mid-winter holidays and ease the adoption of it. Recently read an article with some meat to it though that actually suggests the date is in fact the right date for the immaculate conception to have occurred on the same date as his death. Given the 1st and 2nd century and the need for order in such things it is not so far-fetched. It becomes even more believable when given the Eastern segment of the church did Christmas nearly two weeks later and their calendar has the passover (date of death) the same roughly two weeks later. Clearly, I think it is impossible to prove any theory given the lack of documentation but it makes some convincing arguments.
  • Just saw a T-shirt that said (in symbols) square root of negative one heart MATH. I laughed out loud a little bit and had to wonder just how many other people got that?
  • I have to wonder how many people know that the so-called swing flu does not come from eating pork? I had to thought to blog about things back at the first outbreak and probably need to do so again. I was eating yesterday and overheard a conversation where almost universally given the choice of eating pork that was had swung flu or pork that made you gain ten pounds for every pound you ate they choice the later. And since I am just calling people out, yeah, you do NOT get swing flu from eating pork. Period. And one more thing, it should be called H1N1!
  • An update on finger nails and biting them. If you read that you recall my method of ceasing, and no, I can not explain it for sure other than it works and required will power. That being said though, I am up to five nails that I am not biting.
  • Anyone tried this Google DNS? Suppose to make your browsing faster, but I got my doubts. In theory things I lookup regularly will be cached at the local DNS server and not have to go further. For me to hit the servers that Google has I have to make that set of hops across the internet every time and back. I am also a little concerned that to many people started using this it puts to MUCH power in Google’s hands. That all being said I will probably give it a try to see what I think, though I doubt I will keep it beyond a trial period.
  • I find it so cool indeed that a website that I have been working on slowly over the last couple of months when I had a spare minute here or there started getting a bunch of hits from preliminary setup and work with SEO. Guess it means it is truly time to get busy with finish it up. I will give the URL here sometime soon when it is more complete, as right now it is a bit of a mess.
  • I think I have just met myself in about forty years. His name is Joe and he has an assistant dog named Vicki. Comes to the Hub Coffee Shop apparently about every day. Dog is one of the few more well-behaved then my own Bitzer. Well, at least she is well-behaved if not around the spastic mess (possibly retarded) of dog I call Waylon – he brings out the best in everyone. And lets me honest, here, he is learning and getting better, just still has a long way to go and he is a bit slow with it.
  • Android phones have a TM note on commercials and websites that I caught last night during some football. Droid is a term that is officially trademarked to the Lucasfilm, LTD, and related companies. I find that interesting. Is that contraction of android originally found in the 1978 classic? It just such a common word for me, but then again I am that generation. And Lucasfilm, if you happen by here, “These are not the droids you are looking for.”
