Even More Observations
I think this is fourth almost weekly post of short little observations I have made over the past week. I am a little concerned though, as this week found me getting my bet inspiration for little short blog entries when I was busy otherwise. And so I have very little in the way of little notes like I would have otherwise and with my aged mind working against me I am not sure that I am going to be able to remember the better parts of what would have otherwise been up in the offering here. For that I do apologize and will try to make a bit better use of note taking devices for this coming week.
- I got excited about football last weekend, but I have to say I am still not sure about the way the BCS scoring works out for bowl games. When I look at what Texas did last week I am not sure they deserve to be playing for the top spot. I am not sure if it should have gone to Cincy, but I think they are a notch above Texas, who if not for a 1 second maybe gift would have been bet by a team with NO offense. And speaking of which, how about a defensive guy for the Heisman – Suh is just awesome.
- Staying with football and switching the NFL for a second. Pittsburgh just blows right now, how the heck did that happen? Pats are also on the ropes, but likely to make it anyway. The Bengals, who would have thought that? And what about the Saints, another surprise but they are rolling. My biggest disappointment? The old man, know by most as Farve, seems to be hitting is usual end of season implosion. That really is a big let down, since the old man is only a few months older than me, I was rooting for him big time.
- My post yesterday, about affairs, should not in any way be construed to mean that I am against romantic love. In fact I all for that aspect of things, especially, as a friend pointed out shortly after my posting of it, that romantic love is much more about the ideal of it and especially when the other person is unattainable. Oh my, I really think that is deserving of its own entire blog now that I think on it just a bit. And I promise, unlike Ulrich, no body parts shall be severed and sent to anyone – especially an ideal romantic love interest, regardless the offense of said body parts.
- On a much lighter note is a couple of comics that everyone should read. Well, okay not everyone, as they definitely going to have a specific group or two that gets them (with some major overlap) and a lot of folks who do not. The first one, which I have been reading off and on for a while is Devil’s Panties by Jenny Breeden. The name is a bit odd, but not what you are thinking. She talks about comic cons, LARPing, and general geeky life as a girl and artist – I recommend you start at the beginning and work forward. SCA and gamers, as well as the obvious comic fan will really appreciate this one.
- The second one, which is a bit deeper on the intelligence scale is called xkcd and is written by Randall Munroe. It is funny and has a lot of science and math humor in it as well as the just sometimes odd things. It even goes over my head on occasion with the depth of knowledge required to get the joke, though not very often (thankfully). Not much on art, as most things are presented with just stick figures – but cracks me up. By the way, xkcd can not really be pronounced so stop trying – of course they said that about SQL too.
- We here in Kentucky have a chance for a white Christmas in 2009 if looking at the right long-range forecast. One that I have looked at has rain on Christmas Eve’s Eve. And as the forecast said, “much snow” on Christmas Eve. The temperature is going to be just such that it could accumulate, especially later in the day. And of course the temperature overnight would leave it on the ground for Christmas morning.
- Henry VIII is alive and well by the way. Well, maybe not himself, but some of tax plans from 500 years back are still in effect. Originally a tax to compensate the King for deer that jumped out of hunting park, it is still in place on property that adjoins the public lands today. The moneys collected are used to maintain the parks, but several residents are saying enough is enough.
- Speaking of Henry VIII (Henry VIII Sporting Injuries), a nice little video from YouTube examines some of the young Henry’s sporting injuries. As I am sure some know but many do not, the young Henry was very active engaging in tennis, football, and of course jousting. Injuries include bad sprains and such to his legs with tennis and two major jousting accidents, one in which he forgot to close his helm and was struck a blow to the head. If you go to check out the video, also check out this one, which talks more about his youth and desire to joust and the conflict he had with his father, King Henry VII over the matter. And as football brings me full circle to where I started 500 years before, I shall end here.
