Back to Reality

Broken FingerI returned from my semi-annual trip down to Mississippi for the annual event known as Gulf Wars a few days back. This was the XIX such event but I think it is only my V in attendance, which I started with Gulf Wars X. If you know what I am talking about great and if not read on a bit more. Having been back nearly four full days now, I am finally finding myself realizing I am back in the modern world of reality. Despite a broken finger tip I think I would still much rather be that six hundred and fifty miles away and about seven hundred twenty-five years ago…

For a little background, in case you a wondering, the event known as Gulf Wars is an SCA event that historically was between the two SCA Kingdoms Trimaris and Ansteorra (largely being Florida and Texas respectively) hosted by Meredies (which included at the time Mississippi, Louisiana, Georgia, Arkansas, Alabama and Tennessee. More recently Meredies split off the Princapality of Glen Albin (Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, and part of Tennessee) and that Kingdom now plays host. The war pulls in a huge number of SCA people from across the south and midwest, but even beyond, totally around three thousand people annually (historically I have heard reports of twice that number, but I have my doubts as to the accuracy of those numbers now). SCAdians (as they are called) involve in a number of activities include arts and sciences, dancing, rapier fighting, chivalric combat (oft called heavy combat, which involves heavier weapons and similarly heavier armor), lots of parties, equestrian activities, and a lot of hanging out with like-minded friends for the week.

That all being said my big attraction is of course first and foremost just getting away from the modern doldrums of the high-tech office for a week and a few days to do something completely low-tech without any real sense of urgency. Beyond that, this event has equestrian activities that are medieval in general almost every day and draws probably the largest collection of SCAdians and horses at any one event on a regular basis than any other. This year in particular was special, in offering the first ever official SCA experimental balsa wood joust, in which I got to participate. Anyway, enough about the war here, as I will be writing much more in regards to those exploits over on eligius.org here very shortly.

I have returned to the reality that I left. This reality includes work and its many demands. It also includes the lack of much in the way of blogs both here on mephistos and especially my other blogs and internet projects. I have a laundry list of things to accomplish. A quick rundown follows and as I finish them I will change them to yellow, if I remember that is…

  • all blogs up to date on software and plugins
  • regular blogging on both eligius and here at mephistos, sporadic on travellershavenfarms
  • some blog post over on equestriangames.com
  • reduction of number of ads showing on mephistos, though maybe not – will have to decide
  • an update to the theme being used on both equestriangames and travellershavenfarms
  • several minor updates on eligius (navigation, correction to RSS feeds, maybe more feeds)
  • prolific posting of updates on various sites to drive more traffic
  • checking on some additional blogs that I host to see if they are going to continue to be used or not

In addition to that, I have several things at home that need to be finished as well, which include…

  • preparations for wedding, which now has my attention for a while…
  • finishing my moving process, which has been more than long enough (which will be followed by another move right away)
  • fixing my closet space
  • which will facilitate a place to put my clothing
  • which will facilitate my getting caught up again on laundry

And this of course does not mention any of the multitude of things that I have to work on at the office this week so far and that are the schedule for the future. I left being about a week behind and feel like I have come back being three weeks behind at least.

It is enough to make one think the minor break in the finger is not to bad consider the fun I had the last week. My only real regret is that I feel a broken finger should have gotten me two weeks out of reality.

I wish I were able to go to Gulf Wars this year but with my move to KY I didn’t have the time or funds to go. I hope to go next year. I need to build some gaming equipment to use here so I can get to working with my horses. Are there others here that do any practices?
