Observations for Football
As summer winds down and I am keeping my eye on America’s pastime of baseball, and especially the surprising Cincinnati Reds, I am also turning my attention to fall and football. I thought it would be a good time to make a few notes of what I think will likely happen with the football season, since I do love to watch football, though I admit I have always been a baseball fan and always will be at heart – that is another story though. It does however explain while I only casually root for a football team as opposed to be a lifelong devotee of the Reds. On to football…
First, let me say that in regards to watching football I would much rather on a typical weekend catch a college game or even three over a pro game. That is not to say I will not watch and even clearly root for a few favorite teams in the NFL, but the college game is just much more interesting to watch in my opinion. That being said, I am also much more about watching a closer game then one of my favorite teams blowing someone out. If there is a good exciting game to be watched, I can not even know who the teams are and root for the underdog. Lastly, despite all the negative hype, I do root for Favre. I think it has something to do with us being so close to the same age and every time he comes back it makes me know for sure I can still do whatever I want without worry.
A few predictions and comments…
- University of Kentucky – I do not think Joke Phillips is all that in regards to being a good coach. To many times in the past as offensive coach when something was working and he would change-up the offense and lead to turnovers or just no first down in the red zone or whatever. I personally have the opinion that Brooks had several good seasons and felt he was starting to push his luck. Also, I am just not thinking the new folks on this team are all that good. I will be very surprised of UK has a winning season. I am thinking more like four of five wins to be honest.
- University of Tennessee – I still think when they let the old coach go a few years ago they made a mistake. I will predict another less than spectacular season for them this year. However, I think they will stomp UK big time and maybe that will make them feel good. Of course see my comments above.
- SEC – I realize Sabo lost several good players at Alabama. However, I think even his second string will be pretty good versus what is left and coming up in the SEC this year. I would put this team on the list of ones to watch. I really do not care for Alabama all that much, but Sabo himself is a very likable fellow.
- Favre and Vikings – I would love to see this team and the Favre to have another spectacular year. Coming back with an open game against the Saints will probably set the tone for this team for several games to come. I would love to see redemption (though I think that is too strong a word) and see this team go far. I think they have some bit potential, especially given that the pre-pre-season darlings, Dallas, seems to have just fallen apart during the pre-season.
- Patriots – Okay, I admit I am a very casual fan. It helps that a couple of good friends like the team a lot. It also helps when I was deciding for the second time over that the Raiders were a bunch of thugs that the Patriots were coming to their own. My opinion is the team may be hungry this year and they are, for a change, starting out, relatively healthy. It could be an interesting year.
- Colts – Way too many people I know like them and I have never really cared for them. It makes it easy for me root against them. Also, in pre-season games they have looked really bad. I am thinking this year it is not going to be pretty, despite the talent they have. Unless of course they gel together between now and then.
- Cowboys – They may be supposedly America’s team, but they are not mine. Happily, pre-season they have looked about as bad as you can look. All the early predictions seem to be way off base. I imagine this team will play better once the season gets under way but currently they look so bad I will be surprised to see them come post season.
- Texans – Out of no where seemingly, but they have looked the best I think of any other teams in the off-season startup games. If were going to put money on the season ending without including Favre (and using my brain instead of heart) I would pick them to be there for sure and maybe, just maybe the team to take it all.
