Sponsor Ads
During the recent major theme change over that I have done here at Mephistos, I have also re-visited the idea of sponsorship advertising. You have probably seen the two by three row of advertising labeled as sponsors over on the left hand side bar already. At current time, I am just running some advertising over there, but I will be actively pursuing actual sponsors in the form of advertising going forward. There is a bit of discussion to be had about the idea of advertising on a blog, so here we go.
To be completely honest, at first I was just not that concerned about doing anything more than a few Google based Adsense areas on the blogs. Actually, in the very beginning I only had one of those. For several reasons though, the Google based ads have become much less effective over the years. They used to pay much higher prices, though I suspect the lower prices are somewhat related to the economy. Couple that with the simple fact that the typical internet user of today is not as apt to click on ads that are displayed and I am left with a trickle of revenue. And of course some the things that Google has done over the last few months has really turned me off of the company in general.
I am kind of ignoring the argument that it is blog and should be informative without any kind of advertising. Granted, I never sta?rted this to make money, at least not necessarily, but I would like for it make enough to pay for the cost to host it. So to that end, I have put the grid of 125×125 box ads back on the site. Of course, I have had a couple of them around for a long while and they never went away. Lunarpages for instance, is where I host my site and I have been in their affiliate program for sometime, high recommended them to anyone who is looking at getting started with some websites.
There are two things I still want to do with that group of ads that I need to get going with, before I will be completely happy with the concept. The first option is to make it more like zones for locations, where some are defined all the time and others randomly swap various ads and subsequent attached code. Bottom line this will allow for me to put a largely variety of advertisers in front of people who repeat visit the site. Take the code one step further and key it either tags or categories, so that ads are shown on pages that are more relevent pages to what is being advertised.
Second thing I would like to is have an option to sell that advertising space to whoever might wish to purchase it as sponsor of the blog. It is easy enough to set up manually, but as I am going to be writing some code for the option I would like to have noted above, I think I would like to go ahead and write the code to do a link for purchasing and including the code.
