Mega Millions & DOS
Anyone out there been paying attention to the multi-state lottery game called Mega Millions? It is up to an estimated 350 million for tonight’s drawing. I admit that I buy a ticket to that game and Power Ball on a pretty regular basis. Apparently a lot of other people have decided that is up to an amount that is wort playing for this drawing as the it has increased by I think 50 million since originally estimated based on the ticket sales.
While sitting here working on another blog, I realized it was getting close the drawing time. Normally I would wait for a week or two to check, as I play the same numbers consistently. For whatever reason I decided to pick up an extra $5.00 ticket. Not knowing those numbers, I decided I would check them. I typed in the URL for the Kentucky Lottery site and after a bit realized it was not going to load. After checking again, I realized the website was being basically DOS because of the number of request coming in to it.
Not to worry yet, I figured that would be a Mega Millions site as well. Sure enough, there is under the obvious Mega Millions .com name. Given a multi-state setup I hoped it would be a bit more robust. I occasionally got a bit of information to load saying something about the numbers would be posted shortly.
I am not going on 15 minutes and I got nothing at all. Suppose I will try again in the morning at this point, as I am about turn in for the evening. I am disappointed that the various groups involved did not plan on this and prepare for it. Maybe if I get the win I will donate a few servers and a bit of bandwidth back to them… nah, who am I kidding?
Note: Picture will come sometime tomorrow, when I can actually get a page to load with the Mega Millions logo on it!
Another option was just searching Mega Millions on google news (news.google.com).
