Top Ten – 2010

Top TenI did this last year and though this is a bit late at this point, I decided it was a good thing to reflect back on the year past. So here goes with a top ten events or happenings in my life from the past year. And yes, it is in a list. Definitely still an issue with WordPress not doing ordered lists in a reversed countdown, very disappointing, but I suppose I really should not have expected that change. As usual, I am making the list and since it can not be ordered in reverse, I am just putting them down as the occur to me. Because of that, I will shoot for ten, but may be more or less, just depending on how things work out.

  • Jousting, even with balsa wood, is something I have been doing for while now. However, getting to do that in the SCA as the experiment has official approval to proceed, at Gulf Wars in March was ranked up there on my activities this past year.
  • While it is not as high up there as things would if it were the purchase of some farmland, renting a place that has an extra room for me to have as office is a pretty darn awesome thing. If I could only get things completely organized, cleaned out, and put away in there – but in my defense, I generally am getting things done up there instead of things put away and organized.
  • The trip to New York City with some of my wife’s family was a good thing that makes the list. While I had been around the area a couple of times, I had never made NYC a specific destination like this trip and it was very enjoyable. Loved the city and there was so much to do and see that I definitely want to head back one of these days.
  • Related to the NYC would have to be Central Park. So hard to narrow that down to anything more than that – what with things like the tribute to John Lennon going across the park to the Alice in Wonderland statues. Really, the park is just a really neat thing and to find it in the middle of the island grown up all around it makes all the more awesome.
  • Having lived without a horse trailer for almost two years, getting one, despite the somewhat ugly looks and need for some work to be done was a highlight this year.  No longer left to begging, borrowing, renting, and almost stealing to get my horses from point A to point B.  A good note to, I have done some hauling for a bit a of money on the side.  Always a good thing to help with the cost.
  • Still related to the NYC trip, seeing all the armour in the Metropolitan Museum of Art was, probably the highlight of the trip. My only complaint is the 15th/16th century harnesses were out in the extremely well-lit areas and the 14th century gear tended to be in the dimmer lit display cases. Of course my pathetic camera didn’t help that any either.
  • Rediscovering fishing is definitely right up there on the top list for 2010. I can easily recall a time from about the age of eight up through about the age of twenty-four or so when it was fishing every weekend that practical. Sometimes in those years, especially toward the end a night or two in between the weekend was good as well. For whatever reasons I kind dropped out of it but this summer I picked it back up. While I can’t say every weekend, I can say a good number and several weekends when it did not walk otherwise the small lake (really pond) in the park behind the condo had me in attendance.
  • Royal Hunt Event for the SCA. I know it is odd, considering all the big events I attended last year that one so small and local makes my top ten list. But it was a good event and had a lot of the elements of why I had been attracted to the SCA to begin, small intimate group spending time around the camp fire telling the occasional tale or singing something bardic and of course a few of the gambling tables. So despite barley having time to get on a horse myself, it was a much-needed rejuvenation.
  • Similar to the office space, having the garage downstairs that allows me to work on things without a huge concern is awesome. Granted, I do have to share space sometimes with laundry and storage, and even sometimes a car – it is still a plus. Awesome things like painting lances and polishing up armour are now possible once again, not to mention some construction of the same.
  • Getting married to my wonderful wife, Shauna. It was a beautiful ceremony and life is grand. We are getting on very well and I really am happy for the most part.

Think you for your kind words ElizOf. Looking at your blog and I am definitely interested in mutually supporting. There is a subscribe, under Entries RSS, but I am working on making that better placed and more distinct sometime today or tomorrow. SCA is Society for Creative Anachronism, a medieval reenactment/recreation group. Search for it here to get more info and links to their sites, but the main site (which is dry) is SCA.org

Ray, I like the personal nature of your top ten list. Congratulations on your marriage; Shauna is truly blessed! Royal Hunt Event for the SCA? Next time you come to NY, give me a holler and I'd happily show both of you a few awesome places you might have never considered... I see you are still working the challenge? You need to add postaday2011 to your tag list so others can connect with you. :-) For some reason, I don't see your subscription box... If you are still interested, let's support each other on this daily journey. :-) Elizabeth
