WordPress 3.1 & Debian (Squeeze) 6.0

Debian WallpaperBig news in the tech world coming soon with both a pretty big set up feature updates in WordPress and a whole new Debian 6.0 (Squeeze)I am starting to get really anxious about the upcoming WordPress 3.1 release. Has anyone seen a date announced as of yet? I have been running the beta and release candidates over on my test blog site (ray-cornish.com if you care) for some time and I am pretty enamored with the logged in user menu bar at the top of the page. That is what appears to be major update in this version by the way. Though there are some other nice features that I think will be beneficial those running BuddyPress, WordPress MU, bbPress, or any combination of the above.

Anyway, I can tell the release has to be getting close based on the recent round of rapid fire updates on major and typically very stable plugins. Those usually fire rapid like they have of late for about two to three before the major release comes out of the WordPress platform. And after all, the RC2 (release candidate 2) was done January first if I recall correctly, so it is about time for it to roll on out.

Did not mean to get so excited about the whole thing with WordPress to the point of forgetting the Debian upcoming release. I know I for one am looking forward to it. I am thinking, while my Ubuntu is a Debian based distribution I may just have to roll back to Debian completely. After all, this a major overall the likes of which has not been done in a while. Also consider my growing general disappointment with the Ubuntu line of things and especially consider that in looking forward to the next version with the dropping of Gnome for, what is it called… that other desktop that seems less than a desktop.

Regardless, I do see a definite install of Debian on some partition and playing around with it to see how it is all working out. Reality is, I would probably wait a month or two for the additional discovered kinks to work their way out before I made a swap over completely. Oh, I forgot to actually mention the date. I have read that the 6.0 Debian release, codenamed Squeeze will be made available the first week of February. I think I have seen both February third and sixth as potential and/or announced dates so a little unsure about the actual day. Anyway, go looking for it that weekend, once the servers have slowed down and caught their breath.

Those unfamiliar with Debian should know that there is much official and semi-official software for Debian Stable that is not available from the default install. Although once released Debian Stable does not change there is newer Debian-supported software for Stable, including both newer kernels and newer applications. Debian’s reputation for being “difficult” can probably be traced to having to manually enable access to such additional software, particularly the multi-media software, that many expect to have. Details on the software available to Debian Stable users can be found at: http://wiki.debian.org/DebianSoftware
