NFL Lockout
The ongoing saga of the NFL lockout is turning this mostly former fan of the NFL off even more. You may recall that I was more put out with the off field actions of some players last season and even more so with the media hype that was given to those alleged events that occurred off the field. At this point, the NFL is loosing those of us like me but if they keep it up, they are going to start to lose more hard-core fans to other options in the very near future. Here a few thoughts of mine on the matter for anyone that may care.
- While we all agree that most star players are probably over compensated for doing something that really love and just happens to be a game, most of us also understand the things that the players are asking for in the possible contract renewals. After all, for every star player that signs a multi-year multi-million deal there are probably ten players on the team that sign for a much more reasonable amount. We also understand, especially, that this players do extremely well if they last five years, the rare one makes it ten, but most are a few years at best. When you figure that, approached a hundred grand a year does NOT go very far.
- Given the length of time most players are able to keep playing and especially given how rough the game typically is, it only makes sense that the league should look after players that have gone out of the league with some manner of health care. Build it into the compensation package or something, but for Pete’s sake, this are the guys going out week after week and putting it on the line. They are who the fans come to see, so take care of them after the fact.
- Come on owners, just how big a piece of the pie do you really need to have? I know times are tight and you have to cut costs, but then again think about it. How many of the owners have put up the full cost of a new stadium? Most have gotten funds historically from the municipalities in the local area to help build them, not to mention tax breaks and incentives to locate in the area in the beginning. Also, so many of the stadiums get huge corporate sponsors to name them too. Add to that again, that fans don’t really give a hoot about the owners, but rather the players and it only makes sense how the pie should be divided.
- Robert Goodell, well, to put it simply, he just has to go. I am not usually so against someone on a personal basis, but he really seems to be completely out of touch with the fans and certainly is out of touch with the players. As long as he is associated with the NFL there will be people who are against the NFL. Also, tell me how it is that he was able to say to a court ordered lifting of the lockout that it will take a little time? If it were you or I, we would have been in jail for contempt before the morning was out if we tried to do that.
- Is the draft kind of pointless to have happened given the total lockout? Is it right to really have the draft before free agents and trades can take place? What about the guys coming into the league now expected the funds they are promised and there being a realistic possibility of no or at least a limited season?
- Speaking of that later possibility, how would a couple of games missed impact the season? Think about it, the pre-season games are soon going to be in jeopardy even nothing else just from a getting in shape and learning the systems in time. How many games from the front end of the season would make the season less than meaningful?
