Ubuntu Beta Questionable, Mint Soon

Linux has a couple of major releases coming out in the not so far off future and of course, being Ubuntu and Mint it has me a bit excited. The unfortunate thing of the matter is that the Ubuntu 12.04 release is supposed to launch on the 24th which also just happens to be my anniversary. I am thinking the idea of me going off by myself for the evening is not going to be kosher with the other half, so I had a plan late last eve.

Mint, Cinnamon, & Ubuntu

I know, I last left you with the intent of posting on a more regular basis. But I think it was that afternoon, or more likely late that evening a long time tech friend got back to me about something I had said about my going through various Linux distributions over the Christmas Holidays. Specifically, said friend was pointing out the error or my conception regards to Linux Mint being a version or two behind where Ubuntu was. I am not sure if that was just because of my previous testing sometime ago or just a complete error on my part, but regardless, it pointed to some additional exploration being required on my part.

Unity or Gnome 3?

I have taken the advantage of the Christmas Holiday time, with some much-needed time away from deadlines and such at the office, to get back in touch with Linux. Actually, let me append to that, I had not left the Linux world, but rather, outside of some short quick glances into Ubuntu 11.4 and 11.10 I was stuck back in a 10.4 world. My personal and work machines were either running 10.4 or dual booting there and Windows XP or 7.0. I do have a couple of machines with Centos and such setup, but honestly, I can not recall the last time that I booted them. So, over the time I have had off, I have installed somewhere in the neighborhood of four distros and played around. But the question of the week is Unity or Gnome 3?

Handy Start Menu – Good Idea!

Just heard about this great little tool called Handy Start Menu. Any of you are using a flavor of Windows 7 or say it is not true, Vista, has seen the way all the programs and folders kind of get jumbled and lumped all together under the ‘All Programs’ label. It is nice to have them all in one place, but has led lately to have put a LOT of icons on my desktop. This is fine for most folks I suppose, but I tend to lose the desktop behind what I am doing, so I needed a change. Quite by accident, I stumbled in Handy Start Menu early this morning and explored around with a little bit, and while a pretty good idea, it led to my even better one.

Office Suites – Best Option?

Long have I been a supporter of the open source code project known as Open Office in the past. More recently though, largely because of Oracle and the general lack of direction, I had jumped on the offshoot and fork project know as Libre Office. Historically of course I have used the assumed standard office suite, at least since Microsoft Office bumped off the Lotus 1-2-3 and Word Perfect back sometime ago. Interestingly enough, I ran into some major issues with Libre Office recently and in that constant evolutionary process, have turned to yet a different player in the arena – Google Docs. So a quick rundown of the approach at reaching the choice is in order.
