Technology Updates

So much has happened the last couple of days that are big technology news I decided to get a jump-start on things and give a quick synopsis of things that have been happening. Some of them, like the release of iOS 5 and Ubuntu 11.10 were expected, though the seeming failure to launch (at least well) of the iOS update was not anticipated. Similarly the death of Dennis Ritchie, computer scientist and developer of the C programming language was not expected. And oddly, I feel out-of-place sitting in a coffee shop using a non-mac based machine – who would have ever thought that?

iPhone 4S & Steve Jobs

My plan was to talk about the iPhone 4S, the latest in that famed line of technology changers today, but do so without mentioning Steve Jobs and his loss to cancer this week just would not be right. So I will give a bit of this post to both the phone the revolutionized the way we communicate and view our world in its latest version as well as the wonderful human being who brought us that device and new vision of the world – Steve Jobs. Now on second thought, I think I am going to have wait on the Steve Jobs post until another day…

Kindle Fire & Refreshes

For Tech Friday today I would be remiss if I wrote about anything besides the Amazon’s new Kindle lineup, including three refreshes of the current product in different formats and the much-anticipated Kindle Fire. I do have to admit that, that my interest in the announcement that a neutrino particle was timed moving fast then the speed of light late last week was a close second, especially when considering what that could mean for relativity and all the last hundred years of physics. It will have to wait for yet another week though given next week all the hype will be on the anticipated iPhone 5. Okay, enough of the tease, on the Kindles…

New Theme

I started the process of finally converting over to a less customized theme by first just looking to see what was out there and what features I did want include. In the end I decided on a really simple theme that has very few custom options which needless to say has very little impact on the load time, especially in regards to database connections and calls for data. I did settle on pretty simple them called PressPlay and after my few slight modifications, that is indeed what you currently see running on the site today.

Facebook, Changes, Attitude, & Google+

There have been some fairly significant changes to the overall appearance of the primary interface that users of the number one social media site, Facebook, see that rolled out to most users this past week sometime. I personally have very little of an opinion about it, but more about that later. My biggest issue is the general lack of concern about the users (note, I did not say customers) that Facebook seems to have shown in this and similar roll-outs of changes in the past. Kind of reminds of some other, earlier social media sites seemed to do – sites that I might also note are almost non-existent due to Facebook. Facebook does have competition these days though and that brings us to Tech Friday…
