Some may recall that sometime ago I had jumped into the Picasa as a photo organizer with both feet. Of course, that was when Picasa, a Google product, had support for not only Windows and Macs, but Linux as well. Granted, the support was kludgy Wine based conversion that was pretty slow, but it worked and allowed it to be used on Linux with out the overhead of Windows. Most anyone who is interested also probably knows that about a month (or maybe it has been two) Google announced that they would no longer be supporting Picasa on Linux going forward. Much to my dismay, I had to search for something else as I rarely boot my desktop machine in Windows and even less does my laptop go there, but those are for other discussions.
I have had in the back of mind for some time about using Picasa as the back end for my photos that were included on my blog. It only makes good sense as I noted just a few days ago, given that I already work up and store all my photos as a backup archive using Picasa. While the NextGen Gallery tool I have been using is great, it has typically meant an extra set of work ups for any photos I had an intention to put to the web. After a few days looking, quite by accident from another blog I have found Shashin (Japanese for photograph) that does all I am looking for with my Picasa pictures. A short list of what features I required that Shashin supports follows:
In the process of working up a couple of new blogs and going through some the plugins that I have on the old faithful blogs and decided what works and what needs to be replaced. NextGen Gallery is a really nice tool that I have used on my blogs, it would seem from the beginning and if not nearly so. It is a way overpowered tool for the options and limited galleries that I actually use it for, but it has served the purpose well all the same and without fail. The only issue I have is more of a recent one, where I have, as of last year started organizing all my pictures into web-based albums using Picasa as the engine. There are several reasons why I chose Picasa, some of which are listed below. The problem is with both Picasa and NextGen, for those pictures headed to a blog I now have to do double duty working them up.
I have not done a group of my short observations in a while and decided it was time to do so. I have a list that is from around Christmas, but I will come back to that one. This one was a list that I had already started and especially came back to when I was writing another blog entry. It was during that writing (see common sense below) that I realized it was only a few words and completely contained. Anyway, without further ado here is some of the things I have been observing and perhaps am continuing to observe here in the early part of the new year, 2011…
Several things were learned while recently on vacation. Posting about them as they come up and starting off with limitations of current digital camera and what I would like in a new one.
Some pictures of the first snow of the winter season. Okay, as a friend pointed out, yeah, not the first snow, but rather the first snowfall with measurable accumulation. Anyway, I took a few pictures of it yesterday morning when I headed out.
