Writing, NaBloPoMo, & NaNoWriMo

NaBloPoMoSometime in the last few posts the blog has went over the four century mark on the number of post. Congratulations are perhaps in order, but not so fast I say. You have not see anything yet. Once of things that I have worked toward the last year or two has been much more consistent posting. Last year you may recall that I participated in both the National Blog Posting Month (NaBloPoMo) and National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) during the month of November. For NaBloPoMo we were successful in 2009, at least here on Mephistos. As for knocking out a rough novel in a month and the other blogs, well, lets just say a valiant effort was made. As we approach the month of November for the 2010 year we are gearing up with a slightly different plan…

First things first. While I still very much enjoy and entertain the idea of knocking out a novel sometime one of these days and have indeed made some progress over the last couple of years with my participation in the NaNoWriMo process I also recognize my limitations. Namely, I have two big issues. One is my life and especially work in general almost always has some busy stretches during the month of November. That and along with trying to blog on several different fronts makes it almost impossible for me to complete the task of writing in a month. Combine that with my desire to get the historical details down along with the details of character development and I easily recognize I need to take a slightly different approach. I have some ideas on that approach and will encourage all to look for something along that line in future posting. Bottom line is I will be forgoing my participation in NaNoWriMo this year.

Given that, I fully intend to participate in the NaBloPoMo. This is the idea where you make a post to a blog every day for the entire month. ?Having done this last year and starting with an attempt to do it not only for here at Mephistos, but also Eligius, Equine Games, and Traveller’s Haven Farms – I have a slightly different approach to things this year. I will be making a post daily to here in on Mephistos for the month of November. However for the other three and the two new blogs that I will be announcing shortly, the intent is instead to have between one and two post per week, with one of those post always occurring on specific day. Once started in November the hope is to maintain the schedule throughout the following months through the end of 2011, which will by default mean it is set for 2011 NaBloPoMo as well.

Speaking of writing and contest here are a couple of other sites that have some good options to pursue in the future:

  • Blog.AccentuateServices.com regularly runs various short story and fiction writing contests. I am not sure that the prizes are really all that great, but getting some critique back on your written work is always a good thing and it is hard to beat the exposure for your personal site, especially if you place higher up in the competitions judging. Be sure to read a couple of the winning entries that were posted for the lust short story theme that just ended a few days ago.
  • HappyFew.Tumblr.Com just ended a great competition that while not writing specifically is one the coolest concepts I have seen a long while. Shakepeare’s Henry the V speech before the Battle of Agincourt on St. Crispin’s day set to your own setting and situation. I will be looking forward to doing something with that particular competition next year.
  • I would like to do something in the same vein here on Mephistos in the near future. If there are any suggestions for a contest or something you would like to see, please let me know.
